Cuando un ser querido fallece, sus bienes, derechos y deudas forman su sucesión. Para que los herederos puedan disponer de propiedades, cuentas o vehículos, hay que completar varios pasos: determinar si hubo testamento, identificar a los herederos, cumplir con Hacienda y, finalmente, repartir los bienes.When a loved one passes away, their assets, rights and debts form their estate (sucesión). For heirs to be able to use property, accounts or vehicles, several steps must be completed: determining whether there was a will, identifying the heirs, complying with the Treasury (Hacienda) and finally dividing the assets.

La ley determina quiénes son los herederos. En ese caso se hace una declaratoria de herederos para reconocerlos oficialmente.The law determines who the heirs are. In that case a declaration of heirs is done to recognize them officially.
¿Qué es el relevo de Hacienda?What is the Treasury (Hacienda) release?
Es un documento del Departamento de Hacienda que se necesita, en general, para que los herederos puedan disponer de ciertos bienes del causante. La oficina le orientará sobre el trámite.It is a Puerto Rico Treasury document generally required before heirs can dispose of certain assets of the decedent. The office will guide you through it.
Algunos herederos viven en Estados Unidos, ¿pueden participar?Some heirs live in the U.S. — can they take part?
Sí. Hay formas de que participen a distancia, por ejemplo mediante poderes. La oficina es bilingüe y puede coordinar con ellos en inglés.Yes. There are ways to participate remotely, for example through powers of attorney. The office is bilingual and can coordinate with them in English.
